Keeping it Brief
La Palmera has been a family-owned fixture in Seattle's Mexican food scene for years. When they came to Bonsai for a redesign, their goals were practical: a site that matched their new brand identity and made online ordering easy to find. The real design challenge was subtler. How do you modernize a beloved neighborhood restaurant without making it feel like a chain?
After discovery — personas, competitive research, marketing strategy, and user flows — I designed around that tension. The UX prioritizes online ordering with clear, well-placed calls to action, but nothing about the experience feels transactional. Soft, flowing shapes and generous breathing room give the site an organic quality that holds onto the warmth of a family-run kitchen even as the aesthetic moves forward.
The brand's own values — Family, Flavor, and Fun — became a design litmus test. Every layout decision got measured against them. Modern enough to compete, human enough to still feel like La Palmera.
